چکیده

When a material is so soft that the cohesive strength (or adhesive strength, in the case of interfacial fracture) exceeds the elastic modulus of the material, we show that a crack will blunt instead of propagating. Large-deformation nite-element model (FEM) simulations of crack initiation, in which the debonding processes are quanti ed using a cohesive zone model, are used to support this hypothesis. An approximate analytic solution, which agrees well with the FEM simulation, gives additional insight into the blunting process. The consequence of this result on the strength of soft, rubbery materials is the main topic of this paper. We propose two mechanisms by which crack growth can occur in such blunted regions. We have also performed experiments on two di¬erent elastomers to demonstrate elastic blunting. In one system, we present some details on a void growth mechanism for ultimate failure, post-blunting. Finally, we demonstrate how crack blunting can shed light on some long-standing problems in the area of adhesion and fracture of elastomers.

Magic angles and cross-hatching instability in hydrogel fracture.

The full 2D analysis of roughness profiles of fracture surfaces resulting from quasistatic crack propagation in gelatin gels reveals an original behavior characterized by (i) strong anisotropy with maximum roughness at V-independent symmetry-preserving angles and (ii) a subcritical instability leading, below a critical velocity, to a cross-hatched regime due to straight macrosteps drifting at t...

Effects of interfacial friction on flaw tolerant adhesion between two dissimilar elastic solids

Flaw tolerance refers to a state in which a pre-existing crack-like flaw does not propagate even as the material is stretched to failure near its theoretical strength. Such an optimal scenario can be achieved when the characteristic length scale is reduced to below a critical value. So far, the critical conditions to achieve flaw tolerance have been discussed mostly for homogeneous materials or...

Self-stresses and crack formation by particle swelling in cohesive granular media.

We present a molecular-dynamics study of force patterns, tensile strength, and crack formation in a cohesive granular model where the particles are subjected to swelling or shrinkage gradients. Nonuniform particle size change generates self-equilibrated forces that lead to crack initiation as soon as the strongest tensile contacts begin to fail. We find that the tensile strength is well below t...

Fast crack propagation by surface diffusion.

We present a continuum theory which describes the fast growth of a crack by surface diffusion. This mechanism overcomes the usual cusp singularity by a self-consistent selection of the crack tip radius. It predicts the saturation of the steady state crack velocity appreciably below the Rayleigh speed and tip blunting. Furthermore, it includes the possibility of a tip splitting instability for h...

Capillary fracture of soft gels.

A liquid droplet resting on a soft gel substrate can deform that substrate to the point of material failure, whereby fractures develop on the gel surface that propagate outwards from the contact line in a starburst pattern. In this paper, we characterize (i) the initiation process, in which the number of arms in the starburst is controlled by the ratio of the surface tension contrast to the gel...
